Our Garden

Cactus

Gymnocalycium

Gymnocalycium, commonly called chin cactus, is a genus of about 70 South American species of cactus. The genus name Gymnocalycium (from Greek, "naked calyx") refers to the flower buds bearing no hair or spines.

In cultivation they are popular for their easy flowering habits, and the flowers are generally brightly coloured.

Mammillaria

Mammillaria is one of the largest genera in the cactus family (Cactaceae), with currently 200 known species and varieties recognized.[

Mammillarias have extremely variable spination from species to species, and attractive flowers, making them attractive for cactus hobbyists. Most mammillarias are considered easy to cultivate,

Spiral Cactus

Cereus forbesii 'spiralis' or Spiral Cactus is native to Bolivia and ideal for garden pots. Here at the Monastery, it is growing outdoors. Doesn't it make an impressive sight? It seems that the spiral pattern of growth minimises the amount of mechanical stress in the growing plant.

A Cactus Poem

Amidst your spines and ridges,

Who would have dreamt producing a flower

so delicate and beautiful

But God, our Creator and Maker?

Could this be His message:

to look beyond the external,

to the inside - to seek simplicity and truth,

beyond the showy and banal?

"Beyond the Showy" by Leslie Cheong

The Flame Tree

Flame of the Forest

In our garden, the Flame Trees of the Forest (Delonix regia) attest to the glory of God.  It is a native species of Madagascar and was discovered by Austrian botanist Wenzel Bojer in 1820 who then introduced it into Mauritius. Since then, the tree has been planted in most of Africa and Asia, including the Southeast Asian region.

Flame of the forest blooms a fire,
Bright red flowers beckoning me.
I pause my stroll for a desire
To make connection with this tree.
From underneath I gaze above
Into the beauty bursting from
This tree, its branches spreading love
Down upon me and most welcome.

I strolled here a lonely, sad one,
Feeling unloved by all the world.
But in moments this tree has done
A wondrous gift of love unfurled.

From flame of the forest I part,
Refreshed with burning, loving heart.

The fruit is used for treating debility and warding off colds. The plant is not drought resistant and needs consistent moisture levels. Full sunlight exposure is preferred, and doesn't grow well when temperatures fall below 28 degrees F (minus 2 degrees C). A standard vegetable fertilizer will work fine.

Vanda orchids with purple flowers, especially the species Vanda coerulea, are popular for their large, vibrant, long-lasting blooms, ranging from bluish-purple to deep grape shades, often with spots or stripes. They thrive in bright, indirect light, high humidity, and require excellent air circulation around their roots, often grown in baskets with minimal media or even just in water, needing frequent watering and feeding during growth. These epiphytic orchids symbolize respect and admiration, making them popular for gifting and exotic home décor.

Asplenium nidus forms large simple fronds visually similar to banana leaves, with the fronds growing to 50–150 centimetres (20–59 in) long and 10–20 centimetres (3.9–7.9 in) broad, with occasional individuals up to 200 cm (79 in) long by up to 60 cm (24 in) wide.[9] They are light green, often crinkled, with a black midrib, and exhibit c

Spores develop in sori on the underside of the fronds. These sori form long rows extending out from the midrib on the back of the outer part of the lamina (frond). The fronds roll back as they brown and create a massive leaf nest in the branches and trunks of trees. Some plants in the Philippines have fronds up to 135 cm (53 in) long while only 3.7 cm (1.5 in) wide.[9]

Mahugani (or mahogany)

Mahugany (or Mahogany) refers to the valuable tropical hardwood tree, known for its reddish-brown wood used in furniture and woodworking, but also refers to its seeds, traditionally used in Southeast Asia for folk remedies like controlling blood sugar and blood pressure, though scientific evidence is lacking, and it's crucial to consult a doctor.
